1927 – Gutzon Borglum (and 400 helpers) began the carving heads of four U.S. presidents on Mount Rushmore (When did they finish? Halloween 1941. Sadly, Borglum died in March of 1941 – his son presided over the completion of the monument.)
1957 – The USSR launched SPUTNIK, the first artificial satellite to orbit the earth — the space race was on!
1965 – Pope Paul VI becomes the first Pope to visit the United States
1970 – Janis Joplin was found dead of a drug overdose — she was just 27 years old
